See if you can follow this logic. John tells us that “God is love.” He also tells us that “perfect love casts out all fear.” Therefore, we have nothing to fear. So why, then, are we told to fear God? Yeah. Its tough to follow. This God who describes himself as “. . . a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation,” doesn’t sound so loving. And yet the prophet Jeremiah wrote, Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.” The same Jeremiah, by the way, who quoted God saying, “Should you not fear me? . . . Should you not tremble in my presence?” How is it that God can be the source for two very distinctly different emotions: love and fear? This series will explore this tension and try to make sense of this enigma.
