Jonah: A Tale of Sin and Grace

The God of the Old Testament is often portrayed as angry and vengeful, but the life of Jonah tells a different story. God is not just a God of justice; he is also a God of mercy. He is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness; he lavishes unfailing love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion and sin. Jonah teaches us that even the most vile, wicked and malevolent people are not too far for God’s grace to reconcile them to himself. But Jonah’s story is also about a prophet with feet of clay. He isn’t immune to selfishness and bitterness and needs to be reminded – like all God’s followers do – that God is for everyone. God wants all people to repent and come back to him. And God makes a way for all people to repent and come back to him.
